History
The not-for-profit mental health resource known as Spring Harbor was formed in Greater Portland in 1999 when Maine Medical Center purchased the for-profit Jackson Brook Institute psychiatric hospital and its affiliated Smith House Counseling Centers. In October 2001, Spring Harbor became the freestanding mental health hospital of MaineHealth, the integrated healthcare delivery system for southern, central, and western Maine.
Today, Spring Harbor plays both a regional and local role in mental health care in Maine. First, it serves as a regional provider of services, working with individuals, hospitals, and other organizations from across Maine to support the delivery and development of mental health services in communities statewide. Secondly, Spring Harbor provides service at the local level, fulfilling its mission as southern Maine's comprehensive provider of inpatient and outpatient services for individuals experiencing mental illness and dual disorders concerns.
